Cardinal Flower is a 2' to 4' tall native perennial with scarlet red flowers. The plant flowers in late summer and fall and features dense spikes of lipped tubular breathtakingly beautiful red flowers. Unfortunately for the gardener, this plant is picky about its environment and requires moist soils to flourish. It will tolerate full sun in cooler climates but prefers some partial shade. Cardinal Flower is often found growing along stream banks, in sloughs, swamp edges, wet meadows, and low wooded areas. A great garden plant for borders, wildflower gardens, pond and water feature margins and other consistently moist sites. Few flowers are more sought after by butterflies and hummingbirds. Native Americans used the plant in a love potion.
