Prairie Rosinweed is a 3' to 10' tall native perennial that gets its name from the rosin-like sap on broken or cut stems. The nearly leafless flowering stem grows from a rosette of huge spade shaped basal leaves. The showy 3" to 4" wide daisy-like flowers with 25 or more petals (rays) grow in small clusters at the top of the plant. Prairie Rosinweed will grow in dry to moist soils and prefers full sun sites. It is usually found in tallgrass prairies, old fields, remnant grasslands, and savannahs. Prairie Rosinweed has a large deep tap root and is drought tolerant. It is a good backdrop plant and is widely used in grassland restoration, conservation plantings, and wildflower meadows and gardens. Birds relish the seed and the large flowers attract numerous butterfly species.
