Blue Flag is a 1' to 2' tall native perennial usually found growing in marshes, wet pinelands, swamps, ditches, and wet meadows. The showy flowers have 3 blue arching sepals that are usually yellow at the base and 3 blue petals arching over the sepals. Three to six flowers are on single stems growing from lance shaped leaves. Blue Flag is a spring and early summer flowering plant preferring moist rich soils in full sun or partial shade. Blue Flag is a great plant for water gardens, edges of pools, drainage ditches, detention basins, and other water features. It is widely used in wetland restoration. Native Americans made use of this plant in medicines to treat skin, liver, and urinary ailments.
