As the name implies the Flat Topped Aster has flat terminal clusters of small white flowers with yellow or pink centers. This native perennial is 3' to 5' tall and grows best in moist soils and is a common ingredient in wetland and retention area mixes. It flowers in fall and late summer and grows well in partial shade or full sun sites. In the wild it is often found in moist thickets, wet meadows and wet woodland borders. Over time this showy aster may form large dense colonies. Flat Topped Aster is a larval host plant to several rare butterfly species.
