Giant Bur Reed is a 3' to 5' tall native perennial forb. The plant has long linear cattail like leaves and zigzag shaped stalks with spherical 1" wide bur-like clusters of greenish white flowers at each angle in the stalk. Giant Bur Reed is usually found in muddy or shallow water or in swamps, ponds or other shallow wetlands. These plants are widely used for improving water quality and cleaning nutrients from the water. Retention basins are just one of the places this plant plays an important role. They are also important plants for wildlife, providing cover and food for a host of critters.
