Cattail is a 3' to 6' tall native perennial growing in shallow water or sites that are flooded the majority of the time. The plant has long narrow grass-like parallel veined leaves and the common name is derived from the up to 12" long fluffy brown seed head resembling a cat۪s tail or a sausage. The uses for Cattail include: basket and mat materials, torch material, insulation, rope material, flower for bread making, and all parts are edible. They are valuable as food, cover, and nesting habitat for numerous wildlife species. The plant is widely used in wetland restoration and erosion control. Cattail is easy to establish and is found growing in all 50 states.
