Blackeyed Susan is a 2' to 3' tall native biennial, or short lived biennial, that will flower in the first year if planted in the early spring and is often grown as an annual. This is a branching late spring and summer flowering plant featuring single showy 2" to 3" wide flowers at branch ends with bright yellow petals and a dark center disk. Blackeyed Susan grows best in dry to moist soils, tolerates a wide range of soil types, but does not tolerate poorly drained soils. It will do well in full sun or part shade. It is perhaps the most often used of all our native wildflowers, both in the garden and in conservation plantings, and has a native distribution over nearly all of the lower 48 states. Blackeyed Susan is widely used in conservation plantings for erosion control and for the benefit of wildlife.
