Blazing Star, sometimes called Scaly Blazing Star, is a 1' to 2' tall native perennial with usually several flowering stems. It is one of our shortest Liatris species. The flowers are somewhat distant in loosely arranged spikes. The flowers are purple disk florets without rays and are given a fluffy appearance by the extended pistals and stamens. Blazing star grows well in dry sandy grasslands and in open woods. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some shading. For gardens it is easy to establish and is best planted with other low growing natives. The individual flower heads are larger than most other Liatris species. It attracts butterflies.
