Indian Cherry is a 10' to 20' (sometimes to 36') tall native shrub or small tree. It has small inconspicuous flowers in the spring but features shinny dark green leaves and red berries that slowly turn black as the fruit ripens in the fall. Another common name is Carolina Buckthorn, however, the plant has no thorns. It grows best in a variety of well drained consistent medium moisture soils in full sun or part shade. The fruits are edible but you will have to hurry to beat the birds to them when they ripen. Indian Cheery is a Great garden plant for privacy walls, windbreaks, or a backdrop for perennial plantings.
