Smooth Sumac is a 10' to 20' tall native perennial small successional tree. It grows best in dry to medium moisture soils in full sun to part shade sites and vigorously resprouts from rhizomes following fire. It has a native distribution over all of the lower 48 states and is usually found in old abandoned fields, disturbed sites, along roads and railroads, open grasslands, and other successional growth sites. Smooth Sumac has good ornamental features for landscaping and gardening like the large colorful leaves and big clusters of showy berries in the fall. This plant attracts butterflies, birds, deer, and a host of other wildlife.
