Regions 2,3,4,5,6 - Dry-Med
Bursting-Heart is a 4' to 10' tall native woodland shrub. The somewhat inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers are produced at the ends of long green branches. In the fall these flowers are replaced with 1/2" wide warty capsules that split open in quarters to expose beautiful showy red berries. It is adapted to dry to moist forests and once established it can withstand some drought. The bright green foliage contrasting with the beautiful red berries makes this plant a woodland and forest edge gardening favorite. This a favorite food of deer and its absence may indicate overpopulation.
