Devil's Walkingstick is a 12' to 20'(sometimes to 35') shrub or small tree. It features naked stalks topped by a canopy of huge (2' to 5' long X 2' to 4' wide) leaves and up to 2' long panicles of small showy white flowers. The common name is in reference to the long sharp spines on the stalk, stems, and branches. Brushing against these can be very painful. The plant is easily grown and prefers dry to medium moisture well drained soils in part shade or full sun. Devil's Walkingstick is not a typical forest plant and provides interest to a woodland edge or native plant garden. It is a successional plant and will eventually disappear under full shade. The multitudes of dark drupes are favorites of game and song birds as well as mammals such as the black bear.
