Wiregrass is a 3' to 5' tall native perennial that is critical to the Longleaf Pine Ecosystem in the Southeast Coastal Plain. Wire grass is a cool season grass flowering in late spring with a slender seed bearing panicle. Seeds have 3 spreading awns. It grows on well-drained sandy types of soil and full sun or part shade sites. The essential value of Wiregrass is as base fuel for a fire dependent ecosystem and the habitat it provides for wildlife such as bobwhite quail and the endangered gopher turtle in the coastal plain.
