Ecotype Seed
Ecotype is a term used to describe a genetically distinct geographic variety, population or race within species which is adapted to specific environmental conditions such as local selective pressure or physical isolation.
Everyone agrees - for best results, plant seeds from parent stock that has evolved over time and adapted to your area. US Department of Fish and Wildlife Service, agronomist, landscape managers and botanist all agree on Ecotype Seed. Native seed has evolved over thousands of years to adapt to the soils, temperature, rainfall, geology, insects, and disease pest for your particular area.
If ecotype seed is desired but is not available then one should look at expanding the search area to include adjoining states and continue to do so until the closest substitute can be obtained. Another option is to look at the specific variety that has traditionally done well in your specific areas. Here at Roundstone Seed we carry multiple varieties of all native warm season grasses.
Roundstone has ecotype seed available for a variety of species and geographic regions. Please see our price list or contact us to discuss.
